Dare to Break New Ground — a message from your District Director

District Director Melody Helleouet opens the year with District 21's vision: Dare to Break New Ground. Not doing the same things a little better — but daring to be Distinguished, to lead, to grow, and to help someone take their first step. Her challenge to every member: What will be your dare this year?

Greetings District 21! 

Our District vision this year is simple, bold, and unapologetic: "Dare to Break New Ground". That doesn't mean doing more of the same a little better. It means trying what we haven't tried, reaching where we haven't reached, and believing that new ground isn't found by waiting. It's found by stepping forward. Sometimes first. Each of you are Toastmasters in District 21 because someone saw potential of personal growth and leadership in you. Maybe that person was yourself! Now it's your turn to see potential in others, to ask the extra question, to make the extra call, to lean in when it's easier to lean back. 
When we hear the word "dare," we often think of something risky or something that makes us uncomfortable. But in Toastmasters, the greatest dares aren't about taking reckless chances—they're about choosing courage.

This year, I want to challenge each of you to embrace your personal dare.

  • Dare to be Distinguished. As a Club, as an Area, as a Division and as a District.
  • Dare to move through Pathways. Embrace our education and new materials to help shape you into the leader, speaker and communicator you strive to be. 
  • Dare to lead. Maybe you are a new Club Officer this year. Maybe you're a Club Coach or a Mentor. Maybe you will dare to lead Speechcraft to help sprout new ground for others and your club. 
  • And finally, dare to grow. Encourage a member to give their first speech. Help a club become Distinguished. Start a new club where there isn't one today. Every achievement begins with someone willing to take the first step.


Our vision is "Dare to Break New Ground." New ground isn't broken by extraordinary people—it is broken by ordinary people who choose to do one courageous thing at a time.
So this year, I invite each of you to ask yourself: What will be your dare this year?
New ground doesn't break itself. We break it. Together. One step, one conversation, one act of courage at a time. Let's get started.
